Oxford/Reuters Institute Journalism Fellowships 2023 for Journalists in African & Developing Countries

About the Award: The fully-funded Fellowships are aimed at practising journalists from all over the world, to enable them to research a topic of their choice, related to their work and the broader media industry, before returning to newsrooms. The Fellowships offer an opportunity to network with a global group of journalists, spend time away from the daily pressure of deadlines, and examine the key issues facing the industry, with input from leading experts and practitioners.
You do not need to specify which particular source of funding you are applying for – we will allocate the one most suitable for you based on your country of origin and research proposal.

Type: Fellowship (Professional)
Eligibility:
- To be considered for a Fellowship you must have a minimum of five years’ journalistic experience, or in rare cases demonstrate the equivalent level of expertise.
- You will be able to write at a publishable level of English, allowing you to participate in the fellowship and produce papers when necessary. If English is not your first language, please present suitable evidence (this is an original certificate no more than two years old and issued by the relevant body) that you are at a suitable standard. Value of Award: Most Journalist Fellowships are fully-funded and cover living costs and accommodation. There are some opportunities for self-funded candidates. Some Fellowships are open only to candidates who are employees of the sponsoring organisation.
Duration of Programme: Fellowships last one, two or three terms.

Komla Dumor Award 2023 for Outstanding African Journalists
Komla Dumor was a journalist of Africa. His passion was to tell African stories to the world with honesty and integrity. It’s a legacy that the BBC wants to continue. The BBC World News Komla Dumor Award will be made to an outstanding individual living and working in Africa, who combines strong journalism skills, on air flair, and an exceptional talent in telling African stories with the ambition and potential to become a star of the future.

Value of Program: The winner of the BBC World News Komla Dumor award will receive a once-in-a-lifetime training and development opportunity with the BBC in London, starting in early September and running for three months.
Additional requirements for all applicants
- You must provide a CV (maximum two pages) / complete a careers hub profile.
- You must hold or be able to obtain a valid passport
- You must not be a current or former member of BBC staff.
- If successful, your employer must be willing to release you for three months from September 2019 for you to travel on your own to take up your placement in London.
- The visa requires that you hold a degree or are studying towards a degree equivalent to a UK Bachelors degree from a recognised university.
- References, proof of employment, birth certificate, passport, an appropriate UK visa and proof of level of English will be required from shortlisted candidates.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (EJS) Center Amujae Initiative 2023 for African Women.
The Amujae Initiative, the EJS Center’s flagship program, is currently accepting applications to join its 2023 cohort of Amujae Leaders.
Application Deadline: 20th February 2023 at 0800hrs GMT.
About the Award: If you are a woman who has invested in a public leadership journey or has distinguished herself in any other sector or professional background but with public leadership aspirations, please complete the Amujae Initiative application form below.
Encouraging women to apply to join the program, Madam Sirleaf said:
“[The Amujae Initiative] brings together African women who have started their leadership journey, who have committed themselves to doing more in public service, to ascend in their roles together with those women who have advanced and excelled in leadership.”
Madam Sirleaf also described how the Amujae Initiative Program will effectively “amplify the voice of women [and] increase the participation of women in public leadership roles.” She noted that while major milestones for women’s rights and political participation have been achieved, there is still more work to be done:
“Although significant progress has been made for the advancement of women, I think it is clear that much more needs to be done from all of us–women and men–all over the world to advance women in all roles in our societies.”
Madam Sirleaf also emphasized the role that men have to play in supporting African women on their leadership journeys.
“Recognize the role and important contribution that women play when they have equal rights, when they have justice, when they are allowed to ascend to leadership on the basis of their effort and their commitment to promoting women throughout society.”

- Is a citizen of and resides in any African country.
- Has proven leadership talent, having excelled in her chosen field and distinguished herself as someone who can deliver transformative impact.
- If not already involved in public service, has the vision and proven commitment to become an exceptional public leader.
- Has demonstrated a commitment towards the upliftment/ empowerment of other women.
- Is patriotic, demonstrating commitment and service to their home country/countries.
